by Dennis Townsend, Contributing Writer Have you ever just sat and thought to yourself, how long will the Earth last? Or how about, if there are millions of galaxies out there, why is it that we seem to be the only planet with life on it? What I believe is that there is other life out there, but we are not meant to cross paths. The influence we could have on another species or they on us could be an imbalance that the universe is quite not ready for yet. In the eyes of others, we could be considered barbaric or in the eyes of a dominate species, weak and docile, which could make those premonitions about alien invasion a reality. Star Trek fans are very well aware of the “prime directive” which forbids interfering with the evolution of other galactic cultures and species and perhaps that could be a creed of another species when it comes to us. Somewhere out there, far, far away in a galactic abyss, two Voyager spacecrafts are speeding along with a plaque and a gold phonograph record saying hello, we are located in the what we call the Milky Way galaxy, third planet from the sun. Stop by for a spot of tea if you are ever in the area.
God, Allah, Jehovah, or Spirit in the sky, whatever your belief, it was wise of that entity to determine that all species have their own personalities and imperfections and interactions with each other would not serve the purpose or plan which they envisioned. Science dictates that the universe was created by the “big bang”, and religion preaches God as the almighty creator. The arguments about which is correct is mute because God could very well have created the bang that brought forth this galactic canvas in which the universe was painted. With so much “space” out there, boundaries are natural meaning that where we probably can not survive another species could. It is arrogant of us to think we can destroy our planet, and move on to another like we're just moving up the street. Mars is the big talk at this point when it comes to conversations about an “Earth Two”, but somehow that seems to be a very questionable maybe. Mars is a hostile planet with 6 month winters and planetary dust storms that make living in above ground structures sketchy at best. Not to mention the logistics and the lack of sustainable water. Not human species friendly, possibly a natural boundary. Climate change, you hear about it. They just had a summit about it with world leaders in an attempt to stop the elevation of the poisons that are being expelled into our atmosphere. Yet those that make money off polluting our planet are the first ones who deny global warming. We must change the way we live and that is going to be difficult with the money makers promoting more and more pollutants in the name of profits. How many more oil spills can this planet and wildlife endure? How many more earthquakes will it take before the Earth shakes apart? As of right now, scientist say that the Earth will die in about 5 billion years and by the time that happens I'm sure humans will be just a memory to somebody, but our footprint in the sands of time in the Milky Way galaxy will remain for ions in the form of the space junk that we leave behind before we depart. By, Crystal S. Kauffman, Contributing Writer I began wondering about how many hybrids actually exist in the world, after writing the article about the hybrid big cat named a Liger. I was completely amazed to see how many hybrids actually do exist thanks to modern technology. Most of these animals were created by man’s interference and the hybrids are generally sterile. I am compiling a list of different hybrid animals, which you can go take a moment to learn more about.
Here is list of beautiful hybrid animals I found: Liger- Male Lion and female tiger or tigress Tigon- Male tiger and Female lion or lioness Leopon-Leopard male and female lion or lioness Pumapard- Leopard and Puma (cougar) Zonkey-Zebra and donkey Zetland-Shetland Pony and Zebra Zorse- Zebra male and Horse female Grolar Bear-Grizzly bear and Polar bear Wholphins- Bottle nose dolphins female and a false killer whale male Cama- Dromedary camel male and female llama Beefalo- Domestic cow female and bull American Bison male Wolfdog- Gray wolf and a dog (German shepherd, malamute, husky, and ECT…) This is not a complete list of the world’s different hybrids, but it will get you started in learning more about these amazing creatures. I had no idea that any of these hybrids existed, until someone told me all about the biggest cat in the world…Hercules! This unique cat was called a Liger and I had to find out more about how he was created. During my research, I seen pictures of other unique hybrids that I just had to share with my readers. By, Crystal S, Kauffman, Contributing Writer .Until eight weeks ago, I had no idea what a liger was, until I read an article about this beautiful hybrid big cat that only thrives in captivity. According to A-Z Animals, a liger is the offspring of a male lion (Panther leo) and female tiger or tigress (Panther tigris), which is striped and can come in different colors like tan with black stripes. Additionally, the hybrid liger can also come out white with black stripes; however, the color depends on the color of the parents.
So far, ligers have not been found in the wild, because lions and tigers actually live in different areas of the world. According to A-Z Animals, these hybrid ligers are generally sterile and only a small number of these beautiful big cats can be found in different zoos. These hybrid big cats measure about 12ft. tall whenever they are standing on their hind legs. These amazing hybrid big cats are huge compared to it parents and generally is known is the world’s largest cat. Mating in captivity can happen in two different ways, which can be completed by natural instincts and mating has been done by human intervention. According to A-Z Animals, the liger has the mom stripes and some have the father’s mane and generally takes after the father in look, but the liger’s mane doesn’t look like the majestic lion. Some male ligers may not even grow a mane. Every time a liger is born, it is anyone’s guess as to what he or she will look like once they are full grown One liger named, Hercules carries the world record in the 2014 Guinness Book of World Records for being biggest living liger in the world. According to Huff Post, Hercules weighs 922lbs and 131 inches long, as well as 49 inches tall at the shoulders. He enjoys his home at the Myrtle Beach Safari Wildlife Preserve in South Carolina. As a liger, Hercules is an endangered species due to the small number of these hybrid cats in the world. Kauffman, Contributing Writer The Burmese Python and other exotic snakes have been getting bad press coverage lately in South Florida. I have decided to investigate the actual meaning of being a responsible owner of one of these exotic snakes. I found many interesting websites, which can educate a new snake owner. These snakes need special types of housing and care, so the new owner must be prepared to accommodate their growing needs.
Knowledge is Power Before buying the snake, a person needs to consider the expenses associated with buying these exotic animals. The animal will require veterinarian care, special housing, live animals, and so much more as they grow. Take time to study and know what type of snake that you are interested in owning. Many new snake owners buy the snake as a baby and don't realize how big they can become. In the right conditions and housing, these exotic snakes can grow to an enormous size and length. Veterinarian Care Every year or so, the snake will need a check-up or other medical care, but emergencies will pop up from time to time as well. Take time, before purchasing a snake and find a vet that is able to treat reptiles like snake and lizards. Not every veterinarian will offer this type of care, but the potential snake owner should look around for a local vet that offers this specialized care. Ask other reptile owners and pet shop personnel about the veterinarian that tends to their reptiles. Special Housing The snake will need an escape proof wooden cage that will allow the snake to grow for several years before having to be replaced. Most people build their own reptile enclosure, but they must be sure to consult a reptile cage building website before attempting to build one. An owner should never use a standard fish aquarium for housing, because the snake can escape once it grows bigger and stronger. The snake should have clean housing as well, in order to keep the snake from getting sick. Live Animals Snakes will eat small animals several times a week, but the amount will be based on their size and weight. They eat live rabbit and rats, which can cost the owner a lot of money after they begin to grow larger. These animals can be purchased at a local pet shop, but some snake owner breed their own small animals to cut the cost down. However, if an owner is squeamish they may not be able to handle feeding the snake live animals. Conclusion Exotic snakes require special care, as well as a responsible owner who can give them the proper care that they need. The potential snake owner should do his or her homework and interact with other snake owners. The snake will need the new owner to provide proper medical care, escape-proof housing, and live animals for the snake to stay healthy. However, this type of care can get expensive, so before making the purchase the potential snake owner should weigh the cost. References: Personal Knowledge & Experience By, Crystal S. Kauffman, Contributing Writer The study of the animal's behavior has lead to the well known theory of "natural selection". Therefore, each animal has personal needs that must be met, in order to survive in nature or in captivity. According to Biology-Online, the study of zoology is a branch on biology, which studies different animals and the way they live their life. Most zoologists believe that studying animals and their behavior can teach us a lot about humans and their behavior. Some notable zoologists are: Aristotle, Charles Darwin, Jeff Corwin, or Steve and Terry Irwin of the Australia Zoo.
These scientists are studying their breeding habits, personality traits, and what they eat on a daily basis. The zoologist actually studies the animal's home, in their own habitat or in captivity at a zoo or other place. According to Bolhus & Giraldeau, zoology was first studied by British and German laboratories, in the nineteenth century and it has evolved over the years. Many scientists have studied the theory of "natural selection", which was researched by many different passionate scientists. Each one has strived to become one with the animal, but they also learn to have a healthy respect for each animal they studied. Their work and passion is allowing us to understand the animal's behavior in stressful and social situations. The zoologists are learning how animals relate to their own kind, to other animals, and to humans. According to Bolhus & Giraldeau, by learning how they are raising their offspring, wildlife organizations can save many wounded animals. A zoologist job’s is very important and many zoos hire them, in order to care for the animals. They study how animals behave, especially when they are friendly or when they feel threatened. There are many classifications of animals that are being studied by scientists, who are called zoologists. According to Biology-Online, most spiders are classified separate from insects, since their anatomy is built differently. Some zoologist study Paleontology, in order to learn what extinct animals and fossils were like, when they roamed the earth. Others study the Entomology, which is learning about insects and their behaviors. Some scientist study Mammalogy, which includes animals that carry and give birth to their young. Most mammals feed their baby milk and they are warm-blooded, like humans and dolphins. According to Biology-Online, some animals are classified as Herpetology, since they are reptiles or amphibians. These animals are cold-blooded and lay eggs at birth, like turtles or frogs. Actually, snakes and lizards are studied under this branch of zoology, since they lay eggs are cold blooded as well However, some animals are called arachnids and the scientific name for their branch of zoology is Arachnology. Most people associate this branch of study with spiders that have more than six legs and lay eggs in a sack. According to Bolhus & Giraldeau, the different behaviors of animals are studied by an Ethologist, who also documents each species behavior. Scientist called Ornithologist, actually study birds, by examining how they live and what they eat. Another type of scientist is an Ichthyology, they study fish and how they survive in the ocean and fresh water without air. According to Biology-Online, a zoologist mainly studies the behavior of animals and how they live in their own natural habitat. A zoologist can choose to study all types of animals or they may pick a branch, which allows them to study one type of species like snakes or birds. Basically, there are mainly two types of animals; one is herbivores or a plant eaters and the other is a carnivore or a meat eater. According to Biology-Online, these scientists study the different species of animals and their unique habits. Some zoologists are studying a specific animal's habitat, but some are studying a variety of animals and their behavior. They each observe and chart the interesting stuff they learn, in order to teach future generations all about these amazing animals. Is an Orca a Whale or Dolphin?
Did you know that the Killer Whale or Orca is the largest species of dolphin? They have 4 inch teeth unlike any other dolphin species, which you may have seen while reading a book or in a magazine. There a three groups of pods or herds that the orcas may live in and they eat differently as well. One is called transient and another being called resident, as well as the off shore group. What does it look like? The Killer Whale is identified by its black and white markings along with flippers on each side of the Orca, as well as a prominent dorsal fin. These majestic yet dangerous creatures are nicknamed, the cows of the sea. According to National Geographic (2012), these mammals can reach 22-32 feet long and weigh up to six tons. These mammals can live up to 40 to 60 years, but only when they are not killed due to whales and dolphin hunting. What does it eat? These majestic mammals are predators, who hunt for marine mammals like seals or sea lions. According to National Geographic (2102), two Orcas will hit the iceberg causing it to rock back and forth. Unfortunately, this rocking motion causes it prey like a seal or sea lion to lose its footing. Then, the prey slides into the Orca’s mouth or into the water, where both whales will play with it and they slap it between each other enormous tails. The resident killer whale will main eat fish like salmon, but the transient whales will eat other animals like sharks or sea lions. What is a pod? According to National Geographic (2012), this whale hunts in a large group of whales, which is called a pod or a herd. According to Victoria Water Front Tours (2012), there are three types of pods like resident, transient, and offshore. Some Resident pods have up to 40 Orca’s in one herd and they travel specific places to eat fish like salmon. Scientist do not know much about offshore pods, so the last one is called a Transient which has about 10 orcas who hunt animals from place to place. Can they reproduce? Orca’s can reproduce about every 3 to 10 years and stay they stay pregnant about 17 months and the babies are called calves. Orca mothers are protective over their calves and other young females help the mother out as needed. Babies have been born in captivity or aquariums like the amusement parks of Sea World and Sea Land. One famous calf was born into captivity has been named Shamu and performs for the audience at Sea World in Orlando, Florida. Are they kept in captivity? There are several orcas being held in captivity at aquarium and places like Sea World or Sea Land. The dorsal fin of a captive whale will bend over and stay that way, but these enormous mammals live in small aquariums. These intelligent mammals are trained, in order to perform in an aquatic themed show. The trainers are no longer allowed to be in the water with these giant unpredictable creatures. Are they dangerous to humans? Yes, this massive species of dolphins are very dangerous to humans, even the trainers they work with at the amusement parks every day. Recently, according to Associated Press (2012), a trainer was drowned to death while a horrified audience watched the tragedy at Sea World in Orlando, Florida. In fact, Legacy.com (2012) the recent death of a trainer named Dawn Brancheau, has caused OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) to begin an investigation and Sea World has asked the trainers not to swim with the Killer Whales during their shows. Where does it live?
The Blue Shark or Prionace glauca is most often found in swimming in the open ocean and is never really found near the coastal shorelines. According to FLMNH (2012), this species of shark can be found hunting and living in temperate or tropical waters all over the world. These sharks usually blend into their environment like living in kelp forest or coral reef areas. (PBS, 2012) Blue Shark prefer cooler water temperatures, but they have been known swim in warmer waters. What does it look like? The Blue Shark has a bright blue color or indigo color, but their underbelly is usually a grayish white color. This species of shark has small white rings around its eyes and a pointed nose that will help humans identify them. According to Enchanted Learning (2012), this species of shark has a body that is sleek yet tapered, which allows it to be a graceful swimmer. The adult Blue Shark is about 12 ft. long and it has a moderate sized dorsal fin that sits further on its back. This allows this species can jump out of the water and is known as one of the fastest swimmers due to its elongated caudal fin. What does it eat? The Blue Sharks color helps camouflage the shark whenever it is swimming or hunting for its preferred prey. This species of shark has serrated and pointy teeth that help the sharks grab slippery prey like fish. According to Enchanted Learning (2012), the Blue Shark prefers squid but will eat almost anything that it decides to hunt. These sharks also hunts for prey like sardines or anchovies, but this shark is known as an opportunistic feeder. Do they reproduce? Blue sharks gives birth to live pups, but they can have anywhere from 4-135 pups with each litter they have. However, a normal litter of pups would be about 25 to 50, but more has been reported over the years. According to Canadian Shark Research Laboratory (2012), newborn pups are born after about 9-12 month of gestation and the pups are about 16- 20 inches at birth. The female may wait months or years before she begins to ovulate and decides to reproduce again. Are they dangerous? Blue Sharks are dangerous to swimmers, because there have been recorded attacks on people by this species of shark. However, fishermen are catching these sharks, because they can become a nuisance. The shark now has fewer numbers than it has in the past, due to fisherman catching and killing these majestic creatures. Unfortunately, according to CSRL (2012), this shark is blamed for attacking victims of air and sea disasters. Where do they live?
This type of shark can be found living and hunting in the world’s coastal waters. They prefer murky water and can be found in many different places. They have been found in rivers, estuaries, harbors, and lagoons. The tiger shark likes a warmer climate, so it can be found near Hawaii, but they have found near Iceland and the United Kingdom. Tiger sharks have excellent eye sight and generally prefer to hunt for its prey at night. What do they look like? This species shark can be identified by the shark’s blunt nose and the dorsal fin is noticeably close to its tail. Juvenile Tiger Sharks have different colored dark vertical stripes that look similar the majestic Bengal Tiger’s stripes. However, these markings begin to lighten up in color, as the shark matures into a fully grown adult. These types of sharks or the Galeocerdo Cuvier species of shark can reproduce. How do they reproduce? The female Tiger Shark will have large litter of pups or babies once they have mature in to the adult stage. The pups are about 1-2 feet long, which is really small compared to how big they eventually get. Unfortunately, the babies are left to fend for themselves. Since, once they are born become independent of the mother immediately. Additionally, according to the NOAA (2012) the female shark can have 35 to 55 pups in one litter. How big can it get? According to National Geographic (2012), the average adult tiger shark can reach 20-25 feet. They can weigh up to 1,900 pounds, which is as the same weight of a boat. The Tiger Shark can be as long as its cousin the Great White, but the Great White is has a heavier mass. According to NOAA (2012) it takes about 12-18 years for a tiger shark mature into an adult. This is due to how slow the shark grows each year. What do they eat? The Tiger Shark prefers to hunt it’s pray at night and retreat to deeper waters during the day. They will literally eat anything, even garbage from the sea floor. However, these sharks will eat other sharks, squids, seas snakes, or fish. This fierce hunter prefers to hunt at night; due to the sharks amazing sense of smell. The tiger shark has sensitive smell receptors, which can be found all over their body. What are their nicknames? These terrifying creatures have earned the nick name waste basket of the sea, due to their unusual diet. According to Sharks-World (2012) this type of shark is a will eat other sharks, fish, and other animals, as well as eat garbage from the ocean floor like “pieces of boats, license plates, and old tires”. This shark is also nicknamed man-eater because they are known for attacking unsuspecting swimmers and animals like dogs that swim with their owner. Are they being hunted? The Tiger Shark is not on the endangered list, but the population is being threatened due to being hunted and killed for many reasons. These sharks are being killed due the danger that they pose to humans in Hawaii. However, they are also being killed for their body parts and organs. According to National Geographic (2012), the Tiger Sharks liver has a high concentrate of Vitamin A which is made into vitamin oil. Shark hunters sell their fins, flesh, and skin to different consumers. Are Tiger Sharks Dangerous? However, this Apex predator is extremely aggressive, whenever they attack their intended prey. The shark will continue attacking their victim, but a Great White Shark retreats. This fierce hunter will eat anything it can find, whether it is a fish or garbage from the ocean’s floor. The Tiger Shark has an unusual diet, which has helped the shark earn the nick name…waste basket of the sea. Are they endangered? The Tiger Shark is not on the endangered list, but the population is being threatened due to being hunted and killed for many reasons. Some are being killed due the danger they pose to humans like in Hawaii, while others are being killed for their body parts or organs. According to National Geographic (2012), the Tiger Sharks liver has a high concentrate of Vitamin A which is made into vitamin oil. Shark hunters cut off their fins, flesh, and skin to sell to different consumers who may want to purchase them. A giant panda is an adorable black and white giant bear, which is widely recognized as an endangered species. According to San Diego Kids (2012), this species is related to the bear family, due to the way it behaves like any other type of bear species in the wild. These bears are generally found living in the local zoos or in central mountains in China. The giant panda does not hibernate or sleep through the winter like other species of the bears normally do.
What do they look like? The giant panda has a white head with the cutest black ears and black circles around their eyes, which reminds of a raccoon. This species of panda has four black legs and white can be found everywhere else. According to Defenders of Wildlife (2012) a panda has five fingers and an enlarged wrist bone which works like a humans thumb. The adult giant panda is about 5 ft long, 2.5 ft tall at shoulders, and weighs 300 lbs. Where do they live? They are found living in zoos all over the world, where they are safe from poachers and the hunters who would kill them. The zoo's researchers are learning more about this amazing animal, who has captured so many hearts with its majestic beauty. According to National Geographic (2012), they can be found living in isolated wet areas within the remote mountains of central China. What do they eat? The wild giant panda is good at climbing the bamboo trees, despite their enormous size and stature. According to Defenders of Wildlife (2012), the giant panda absolutely enjoys eating bamboo stalks and they will also eat insects and fruit. An average adult giant panda eats around 25 - 40 lbs of bamboo a day. However, the giant panda will climb bamboo trees, in order to get to the stalks but they usually sleep at the bottom of the tree at night. How do they reproduce? The giant panda will generally breed during March to, but the only stay pregnant for 3-5 months and may produce pregnancy may produce one or two cubs. According to Defenders of Wildlife (2012), the baby panda is hairless as a newborn and they are blind until their eyes open at 6-8 weeks after birth. The baby cub will drink its mother's milk for about six months and become independent of its mother between 1- 3 years Are they endangered? The giant panda is a poster child and well known for being an international endangered species that may need protection. The World Wildlife Fund and other conservationist are trying to protect them in the wild and at zoos. Unfortunately, only one panda cub will survive if the mother has twins. According to Defenders of Wildlife (2012), it is estimated that only about 2000 giant pandas live in the wild and about 200 are held in captivity at the zoo. The panda's average life span is about 20-30 years in captivity, but not much is known about the wild giant panda because they live in solitude. The Humpback Whale is an amazing yet majestic giant whale, which is known as the Megaptera Novaeangliae species. People travel by boat to the warm coastal waters, in order to watch the whales as the play in their normal habitat. Many companies offer an experience of inexpensive whale watching for tour groups all over the world like: Princess Monterey Whale Watching and Whale One. People enjoy being able to get up close and personal to the whales, as they play within their own habitat.
How to identify a Humpback Whale? Did you know that a Humpback Whale is a massive mammal which weighs about 40 tons and can grow to be up to 62 feet long? This whale has a distinct hump on its back and they have largest flippers of every other animal in the sea. This majestic whale is the fifth largest mammal in the ocean and they have two blow holes, instead of one like most whales. Enchanted Learning (2012), the Humpback Whale can be four different colors, but their fluke will always have patches of white on it. What make the whale distinct? The white markings on their fluke helps researchers identify each whale, because it is like an individual human's fingerprint. No two whales have the same markings on their fluke, which is amazing and helps researchers identify new whales that they can study. Furthermore, each whale has distinct throat groves that can be seen from a distance. These throat grooves allow the whales mouth to expand while eating it prey. What do they eat? The Humpback Whale is called baleen whales, because they have several hundred baleen plates that hang from their upper jaw instead of teeth. The whale swallows several thousands of gallons of water which allows them to catch small fish, plankton, and krill. The baleen plates in their upper jaw allow them to catch the prey while filtering out the water. According to Enchanted Learning (2012), the whale will migrate to colder waters, in order to eat the tons of food it takes to fill them up. Where do they live? The Humpback whale prefers to live in a large group or pod of whales, which may be mother and calf or other whales that are relatives. The young calves drink the mother's milk, after they are born until the mom begins to wean the baby whale at 11 months old. According to Enchanted Learning (2012), a female Humpback Whale is generally pregnant for around 12 months and she will feed the calf 100 lbs of milk a day. What is a Whale Song? The Humpback male will make a long yet complex set of noise like: moaning, crying, and howls for several hours. This has been come to known as a Whale Song, which is used to communicate with other whales that are swimming in the area or several miles away. According to National Geographic (2012), this species of whale is well-known for making beautiful and magical noise. This communication between the Humpback Whales has been recorded by researchers and can be found online. How long does it take the calf to grow? The family of whales prefers to remain near the surface, whether they are in the open waters of the ocean or swimming near the shoreline. These whales share a strong bond, so the calf will follow its mother to wherever she decides to migrate too. According to Marine Park (2012), the baby calf will not stop growing until he is about ten years old, but by then the calf will be fully grown. The fully grown calves will generally stay near their mother and other relatives in the pod. Why are they called acrobats of the sea? The Humpback Whales enjoys breaching the surface of the water, just to show off or play. However, they usually arch its back right before it dives back in the ocean. According to Enchanted Learning (2012), are considered to be acrobats of the ocean because they love to surface and slap the water with the huge fins. Sometimes they will even breech the water right near a fishing vessel or a boat, which amazes the people on board. Are they threatened? These whales were heavily hunted for their oil, meat, whale bones by many types of whale hunters over the past years. This is causing the Humpback Whale to become a threatened and endangered species, which is sad. According to Marine Park (2012), whale hunting was banned from 1963 until 2007. However, now the Japanese has approved hunting and killing a certain amount of whales for scientific research. In the shallow part of the ocean, near the beach you will find this hungry bull shark looking for unsuspecting victims like surfers and swimmers. This species of shark is aggressive and account for most shark attacks across the coast lines, like Florida or California. According to the National Geographic Society (2015), the bull shark or Charcharinus lecuasis known for being a carnivore and the world's most dangerous shark out of all of its cousins like the Great White Shark or the Tiger Shark. The shark is larger than a human, so it may mistake the swimmer or surfer for a food and take a bite.
Additionally, this deadly shark is a swift yet agile and can be found swimming in the tropical water but it can move from fresh or salt water. The bull shark has been found swimming in the Amazon, some have followed boats and made it miles up the river without any difficulty. According to the National Geographic Society (2015), this shark can get as large as 500 lbs and 11.5 feet long with a diet of fish, dolphins, and other sharks. Humans that may encounter this aggressive predator will usually feel a hard bump, before it actually takes a bite. Other species usually get blamed for attacking someone, but in fact it is the bull shark yet it is not always noticed swimming in the area of the attack. According to Sharks-World (2015), the bull shark attacks people who are swimming due to its territorial behavior. This man-eating type of shark is darkish gray on the top and generally white on the bottom, as well as it has a dorsal fin. The dorsal fin is what people see when they are about to attack, but not always so it is best to pay attention to the life guard or other swimmers and get of the water when told too. The bull shark is usually a loner until it is mating time, because they don't get along well with the other bull sharks that may be trying to mate as well. According Sharks-World (2015), the female bull sharks is pregnant for about one year before giving birth to a live babies or pups. The female can have 1 to 12 live babies or pups, who quickly leave to be on their own and don't reproduce until they are about 10 years old. The bull shark is not endangered, because the numbers of these sharks are high and they don't have many predators except other sharks and humans. Did you know that there are 26 living species of dolphins swimming in the ocean? Have you ever heard that they are in the same family as a whale? According to BioExpedition.com, they are actually called small cetaceans or a toothed-whales, scientists and biologists. Through their studies they found that they have advanced or complex personalities. Scientists believe that dolphins are truly remarkable and highly intelligent.
However, don't confuse them with porpoises, which are generally smaller than a dolphin. Basically, According to BioExpedition.com, dolphins are a part of the Delphinidae family and porpoises are a part of the Phocoenidae family. Also, dolphins have conical shaped teeth and porpoises have spaded-like shaped teeth. Another difference is that dolphins have a distant break in the rostrum and porpoises don't have one. Dolphins are known as carnivores or meat eaters, but the mostly prey on fish, octopus, squid, and more. They are classified as a marine animal, which bodies that have marvelously adapted to their aquatic environment. According to BioExpedition.com, dolphins usually swim in a series of dives and have attained speeds of 25 mph. Their flippers are used primarily for propulsion and their bodies are able to move effectively. According to the, the dolphin's skin replaces it's self frequently and they have a layer of blubber that hold their body heat. According to BioExpedition.com, all species of dolphins are considered mammals, because they give birth to live young and feeds them milk for almost 2 years. They also stay with their calves for three to eight years or when they sexual maturity, and are ready to start their own family. Numerous studies suggest that dolphins can live about 30 years, in the wild or in captivity with proper care. Most scientists believe that dolphins have been known to bond with other dolphins in their family or pod. Mainly, dolphins enjoy showing off their intelligence and bonding with their trainers. Most captive dolphins bond with their human trainers, as they are being trained to perform stunts. Chances are, you have seen a dolphin perform in person or on television. They enjoy swimming, playing, and performing for anxious fans. Even dolphins that live in the wild are known to perform trick for an audience with food. There are many wildlife parks that use dolphins as a main attraction and use dolphins to entertain the crowd. Many scientists have found that dolphins are gentle and easy to train, by using whistles and rewards like fish or toys. According to BioExpedition.com, each dolphin communicates with unique clicks and sounds, as they swim and play together. Sometimes, dolphins will show affection, by stroking each other with their tail or rubbing their bodies against another dolphin. Every scientist will agree that they rely on internal sonar; in order to swim around the obstacles in the ocean and the aquarium. They can create an acoustic picture of the object, by the echo that follows each of the outgoing clicks. According to BioExpedition.com, all dolphins are characteristically social and depend on social interaction for their basic needs. Some scientists believe that dolphins are capable of showing emotions, just as human does. Recently, their playful personalities have appealed to specially challenged children. So, now there are several organizations, which allow these special children to swim with the dolphins as therapy. Additionally, a vacationer can swim and interact with dolphins, for the cost of a ticket. Their playful nature and intelligent behavior have intrigued scientist for hundreds of years. However, the dolphins have to face many predators in the sea, including humans. For example: many of them are being killed by fisherman, while trying to catch tuna. Therefore, it is important to make their aquatic habitats safer for dolphins, so future generations can enjoy them also. The neighborhood residents in South Florida are facing a potential threat, which is roaming their neighborhoods. This new threat has residents that are living in fear of an exotic snake species that is called the Burmese Python. The National Wildlife Federation (2009) believes that these snakes were once pets, which became too big for their owners to handle. After being released in the wild, these abandoned pets began growing and rapidly reproducing.
Dangerous Neighbor However, throughout the years, the snake population has expanded into the southeastern region of the United States. Now, experts believe that these snakes are becoming a major threat to the endangered species living in this habitat. No one is safe from this threat, since this species of snake can grow to over "20 ft" and weigh in at about "200lbs". Each resident of South Florida are at risk of attack, even inside their own homes. Population Expands According to the Clark (2009), these enormous snakes have already invaded the Key West area. Now, officials are "warning residents" and establishing a "hotline" for residents to call when they spot one. These giant ambush predators are on the hunt for a meal, so residents must closely supervise their animals and children. These monstrous snakes can hide under a bed or inside of a closet, while waiting patiently to ambush their unsuspecting prey. Northern Bound Nevertheless, if something doesn't change, these giant snakes will continue moving north. They will move to marshy lands, as they hunt for more food as they population continues to expand. According to NFW (2009), Florida's officials have established ways for residents to protect themselves from these snakes. However, it is vital for South Florida's residents to be cautious and protect themselves from these giant snakes. Changes Needed Some southern cities are training volunteers and hiring professionals to help capture these massive snakes. Homeowner's are even trying to make sure their home is snake resistant, by leaving them no place to hide. Furthermore, parents and pet owners should also take precaution against these giant predators. This type of proactive attitude will help keep your loved ones safe, while officials work tirelessly to solve this expanding threat. Conclusion In conclusion, South Florida's is facing new threats, as this massive bohemian began expanding into the surrounding areas. Fortunately, officials have warned residents about this giant predator. If something isn't done soon, this new threat will begin ambushing those victims in its quest to find food. Therefore, officials and residents are fighting back, while becoming proactive against these invaders. References: Clark, C. The basking shark is considered the second largest fish or shark, when compared to the whale shark. According to Sharks-World, this gigantic creature is also known as Cetorhinus Maximus, by scientists and researchers who collect vital information from these animals. Thankfully, they do not prefer to eat humans instead they filter feed, just as the whale shark does. They are slow moving and an unusually large mouth. In which they filter feed.
They are not dangerous to humans, because the giant shark is usually enjoying using its wide mouth to eat plankton. They have gills which filter out the items that they don't want, while allowing them to eat all the plankton that they want. According to Sharks-World, these giant sharks can measure up to 33 feet long and the shark can weigh up to 4 tons. The most common names are the big-mouth shark, sun-fish, bone shark, and elephant shark. The basking shark enjoys swimming and living in the coastal waters, which are warmer and offer plenty of plankton to snack on. Additionally, these giant sharks may travel alone or in groups of over 100 members, as well as travel with their mate. According to Sharks-World, they tend to stay near the surface, so they can filter feed using their mouth to process 1500 gallons of water each hour. These amazing animals are in need of protection before they become extinct and future generation will never get to see one up close. The commercial fishing industry allows shark hunting for meat and shark liver oils, as well as other valuable parts of the shark that can be sold on the open market. According to Sharks-World, sometimes these giant sharks are mistaken for a great white shark, but the basking shark has smaller eyes and large gills. This shark's mouth is about 3 foot wide, which allows them filter feed using the gill rakes found in the sharks gills that encircle its head. The sharks don't hibernate but they do migrate to deep waters or other coastal areas, during certain seasons. According to Sharks-World, these sharks vary in colors like blue, white, dark brown, and black which may identifying one a little difficult unless you know what they look like. However, In order to keep the giant sharks from being hunted, we as a generation must try to offer some type of protection now. If not, we will lose all chances of our future generations ever seeing a basking shark, except in school books or the encyclopedia. Whale sharks are a majestic beast, which fascinates scientist and tourist alike, yet many misunderstand this gentle giant. Learning more about this species of shark will help people begin to understand that the whale sharks are not dangerous. According to Shark-World, the whale shark is also known as the Rhincodon typus, which has been confirmed as a largest fish in the entire world. Scientists and tourist have chosen to go scuba diving with these majestic creatures, yet they found them to be docile and nonthreatening to humans.
According to Sharks-World, the whale shark is the largest species of shark in the world, which has been on this planet for millions of years according to scientists. The largest recorded whale shark was 40 feet in length, but some say they have seen whale sharks that are about 60 feet long. They are also known as the largest species of this on earth and can weigh over 20 tons. However, despite their massive size, they are generally known as gentle giants. A whale sharks mouth is 4 feet wide and they are filter feeders, but their preferred meal is plankton or small fish. According to Sharks-World, the gentle giant prefers to live in warm waters like the ones found in Mexico, tropical seas, and Australia. During the spring, the whale shark migrates to the continental shelf, which is found on the West Coast of the Australian sea. This area of the Australian sea allows the whale shark to find plenty of plankton to eat and thrive on. The gentle giant has a flattened head and a blunted snout just above its massive mouth, which has short barbels that protrude from its nostrils. According to Sharks-World, the whale sharks body is bigger that a school bus, which makes this gentle giant the biggest fish on the planet. The sharks back and sides are a dark gray to a brownish color with white spots. The gentle giants belly is white and it has two dorsal fins, which are set facing the rear of its body. The gentle giants have a massive tail, which helps them swim when migrating or just hunting the food they crave like plankton. According to Sharks-World, these gentle giants are considered to be a threatened or vulnerable species, but they are still hunted in Asia and the Philippines. These giant sharks are docile and will allow a swimmer to interact with them, as well as hitching a ride. It is up to us and future generations to help save this majestic creature from becoming extinct. These beautiful creatures are built like a torpedo and attack aggressively, which involves breaching the water at times when the shark captures its prey. According to Sharks-World, these sharks are blue in color and can be around a half a ton or 1000 lbs while they can grow to be 12 feet long. The mako sharks usually don’t swim near humans, but humans have been attacked by this aggressive shark. Fisherman have always told tales about this shark swimming faster than their boats and jumping high enough to jump over their boats, as well.
Pound for pound most powerful shark in the ocean and they are narrowed bodied, but have flat surface at the end of their body that is right by their tail. Their tails are up down from tip to tip, but their bodies are streamed lined for speed and agility when hunting prey. According to Sharks-World, some mako sharks may prefer to swim near the shore in warm water, whiles others prefer colder or deep water. These sharks can be found in oceans around the world, but many are found in the waters surrounding Tahiti. This shark has the speed and agility to track large animals in the sea like: dolphins, fish, and tuna. This shark is the fastest shark in the sea and generally swimming at speeds of 35 miles per hour, but when hunting or migrating they can swim up to 60 miles per hour. The female and male mate, but the eggs remain in the female until they hatch and she will have up to 18 pups which are over 2 ft. long. If there’s anybody who deserves a voice when it comes to the destruction of the environment, it is those who cannot speak, the wildlife of our planet. And if there is evidence needed to prove the instability of a petroleum pipeline it’s the recent pipeline break in Santa Barbara, California. Plains All American Pipeline, a company that has been sited numerous times for countless violations, has yet another blemish on their record of irresponsibility. Since 2006, their company subsidiaries have reported 223 accidents spilling a combined 864, 000 gallons of hazardous liquids according to U.S. records. The latest rupture leaked more than 105,000 gallons of crude oil that covered and killed fish, sea lions, and pelicans. It was the only pipeline in that part of California that wasn’t required to have an automatic shut-off valve thanks to a slick lawyer working for the previous company owner and a court decision in the late 1980’s. Sooner or later the XXL pipeline will come back into the spotlight, and there will be those politicians who will talk of jobs and untold benefits to running a pipeline from Canada to Texas. Benefits that benefit those who lobby for such a pipeline albeit. There is nothing like gambling on the environment to make a buck. If you ask me, the trade-off, jobs for polluting the environment, is a lop-sided proposition. With all the talk and evidence, there are people who say there is no pollution caused climate change which even every 5th grader knows is the wrong answer. They should ask politicians if it would be okay to run a pipeline through their backyards and see if they are receptive to the idea. The XXL pipeline isn’t about jobs, and if you think that, then you still believe in the boogie-man because it’s all about that old nemesis, the almighty dollar bill. What’s really depressing is that there is no worth-while punishment to fit the crime once the damage is done. We have seen the destruction an oil spill can cause, who can forget the BP oil spill which still has oil coming to the surface in the Gulf, and we still debate one another about if a pipeline is good for the country. The question is do we want jobs or a clean environment? We may not be able to save the whole planet, but we should do what we can to save our little piece of it. It says a lot about the condition of the environment when a dishwashing liquid is more popular for cleaning wildlife than it is for doing the dishes. The need for fossil fuels will surely be our undoing in one way or another and while we may be able to tolerate a polluted planet for a little while, in the long run, nothing will survive. DLTPONCHO33 by Lyn Lomasi, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff ![]() The Clouded Leopard is a species of wildcat that is unknown to many. It is believed that there are only 230 of these creatures worldwide, with 118 of them living in the United States, one living on Easy Street at Big Cat Rescue. The clouded leopard is also known as the Tree Tiger and the Mint Leopard. The Clouded Leopard has cloud-like rings on its coat, which are darker on the inside than they are on the out. Sometimes the insides of the clouds or rings contain dots with small black spots on them. The main color (the non-clouded area) is usually gray, golden, or tan. In the wild, there have also been reports of black or white Clouded Leopards. The largest markings are on the legs and stomach. The back of the neck will have two large black stripes. The tail has black rings, instead of the clouded pelt. These wild cats range in weight from 22 - 45 pounds and have short legs. The hind legs are longer than the front legs. The tail is just as long as the body and is very thick and smooth. The Clouded Leopard is actually a separate species of cat than the traditional leopard, but is still in the feline family, along with the lion, jaguar, tiger, and leopard. When raised in captivity, the Clouded Leopard has been known to live up to 17 years. However, when they grow up in the wild, their life span is roughly 11 years. The breeding habits of Clouded Leopards are not known very well, due to their secretive nature. It is very rare to spot one in the wild. However, when giving birth in captivity, a Clouded Leopard generally gives birth to one to five kittens per litter, with the average number being three. They are generally pregnant for about 93 days. While the litter size is fair, less than twenty percent of captive Clouded Leopards will be successful at reproduction because the males often kill the female they are paired with during the mating process. With canine teeth as large as those of a tiger (the largest teeth of all felines), you'd think these cats would be just as big as a tiger. That's where you'd be wrong. Clouded Leopards are bigger than house cats, but they are not as big as the other wild cats. They are about in the middle between a house cat and a wild cat, in size. Clouded Leopards are tree climbers. They have thick paws that are specially designed to help them keep balance in the trees. They can also use their tails to hang from the trees. They will even hang upside down to sleep in a tree, with their paws and tail grasping the branches for support. While the Clouded Leopard is small, it still hunts after big prey, bearing down on it with those large canine teeth, for a quick and swift kill. Its diet includes wild boar, small mammals, monkeys, birds, deer, and porcupine. The Clouded Leopard is classified as an endangered species. *I originally published a version of this via Yahoo Contributor Network by Dennis Townsend, Contributing Writer ![]() Did you know our oceans are slowly becoming unable to sustain life? We take it for granted that because it’s a vast area, that it can take care of itself. It is home to a over a million life forms, and just because we don’t see them, doesn’t mean that they are not suffering, With water covering the majority of this planet we would do well to keep in mind that the oceans play an important part of the eco-system on our planet. The sea floor is covered with countless shipwrecks, and airplanes that have crashed into the seas, and many other man-made materials. The oceans have learned over the years to take these things and turn them into habitats for certain life forms. They become reefs in which corals can attach themselves and provide food for the smallest of creatures. But in recent years, scientist have noticed that the corals were dying off, and with them the life forms that depend on them. And this is a problem since coral is a reproducing life form that is not reproducing in the wild as it should be because of pollution and yes, climate change. There is an all out effort going on in the ocean off the Caribbean coast to try and save the Elkhorn coral which is barely showing any signs of reproduction. Biologist are harvesting as many “eggs” as they can find during the corals “spawning season” to take to the labs to initiate reproduction. The task of finding these eggs are hindered in part because small ocean creatures tend to feed on the eggs. If the coral was healthy, this would not be a problem because it would have an abundance of eggs for reproducing, and for feed. These eggs called, "gamets", are taken to the labs and using a simple process, are fertilized. Once they are fertilized, they are attached to “tiles” a plastic star shaped device, to start growing. This process could not be done in the wild because they would be consumed by the little hungry creatures they normally support. It takes 3 years before they are mature enough to be returned to the ocean where the tiles are attached to a rock or any suitable object with an underwater epoxy. There, they will continue to grow until they are large enough to produce eggs. It will take many years to bring the Elkhorn coral to the point that it can take care of itself, and the biologist continue to use this process every time the spawning season takes place which is once a year. It’s a race which must be won all over the oceans to sustain the corals and the many lives that depend on them. We must stop destroying the necessary eco-systems of this planet at all cost. The battle we as humans face is against the big money making corporations who pollute our planet in the name of profit. The poison in the air and the pollution in the seas is killing everyone, and everything. We know the battlegrounds and what must be done. Are we ready to fight for “our” planet or watch it die? It’s time to speak up. DLTPONCH33 ![]() Aurora, Colorado is abundant with nature, and the kids and I love exploring the city. One of our favorite areas to walk is the Aurora section of the Highline Canal trail. The path is large enough to fit strollers, bikes, or a large group of people. Walking and hiking are longtime habits in our family. So, we generally travel the Highline Canal trail by foot. Many locals also seem to agree, as we often run into other families along the trail. Where does the Aurora section of the trail lead? If you start out near Lyn Knoll Elementary on 2nd street at Salem, the trail continues on throughout Aurora. Depending on which way you go, interesting stops include Expo Park, access to several shopping plazas, the Aurora Greenhouse, the Aurora Hills Golf Course, the Aurora Public Library, the Aurora History Museum, and much more. The kids and I love taking the trails for many of our Aurora destinations because they seem to lead to many of the places we go to. It's a fun way to get where we are going and is also great entertainment by itself. There are several intersections that interrupt the trail, such as Potomac street. Some people choose to end their exploration after one or two intersections. We sometimes continue further and other times exit the trail early. It just depends on our plans for that day. Wildlife flourishes in the middle of the city Each time we hit the trails, there are new discoveries. Our favorite creature that was discovered along the trail is probably a tie between a turtle and a beaver. We got the chance to snap a picture of the turtle. However, the beaver was quick enough to evade the camera. There are also many birds and even prairie dogs and rabbits along the trail. The pace of the trail is perfect for families While bike riders often zoom past, the walkway is wide enough to allow space for families. In our experience, most bikers often stay to one side of the trail, making it a bit safer for kids than some of the other trails we've been on. One favorite stop along the trail is a pond near the Aurora Public Library and Aurora Municipal Court. The trail winds around the pond in a circle or you can keep straight. We usually stop at the pond and watch the ducks and geese. This is also where we spotted the turtle. If you have kids, you know they will want to stop and relax somewhere along the way and with benches and a fountain to watch, this is the perfect spot to do that. If the kids are especially restless, I highly recommend stopping by the library or history museum. *I originally published this via Yahoo Contributor Network May 15, 2007 | An artificial blood has been developed by scientists that could be a substitute for real blood in the event of an emergency.
The blood is made from plastic, so it is lightweight and easy to store and transport. It can be stored as a thick paste-like substance inside of the bags normally used for real blood. Then, by placing the bag into water and dissolving it just before giving it to patients, coupled with storing it in the bags in the pasted form, it means it's easier to transport than the liquid blood. Normal liquid blood only lasts for 35 days after it is donated. Then, it must be discarded, which means that there is blood being wasted often. Refrigeration is also required for natural blood. The plastic blood can be stored away for longer and does not require refrigeration to stay fresh. This plastic blood is made up of tiny plastic molecules that contain an iron atom at the core of each molecule, similar to hemoglobin. This allows for binding oxygen and transporting it around the body. These tiny plastic molecules are made very similar to the hemoglobin molecules and are joined together in a structure similar to that of a tree, branching off at intersections. Their size and shape also closely resembles that of a hemoglobin molecule. By forming them in this way, it makes it easy to bind the oxygen together to distribute it throughout the body. While this has not yet been approved for use, scientists are working on developing a final prototype that would possibly allow for biological testing. The hope of the scientists is that this could eventually be used in military applications, where access to blood supply is important. Since the material is made from plastic, it would also be very affordable compared to natural blood. As reported by Science Daily, Dr. Lance Twyman, from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield said, "We are very excited about the potential for this product and about the fact that this could save lives. Many people die from superficial wounds when they are trapped in an accident or are injured on the battlefield and can't get blood before they get to hospital. This product can be stored a lot more easily than blood, meaning large quantities could be carried easily by ambulances and the armed forces. ..I hope people take the opportunity to go and see the display at the Science Museum and hopefully in the future it will be more than just a prototype, but will be a real product used in life or death situations." Dr. Twyman has been developing the artificial blood for the past five years.
